Teradata Named Pipes Access Module, developed by NCR, is a plug-in for Teradata Tools and Utilities that enables high-speed, stream-based data movement between Teradata and external processes using operating system named pipes. By connecting Teradata Parallel Transporter (TPT) and other Teradata load/export utilities that support the AXSMOD interface to OS-level pipes (for example, Windows named pipes or UNIX FIFOs, as supported by your platform), it lets you feed data directly into Teradata or extract it without staging to disk.

Key capabilities:

  • Streams data into and out of Teradata without intermediate files, reducing I/O and storage overhead.
  • Works with TPT operators and compatible legacy utilities to support both load and export workflows.
  • Supports parallel, high-throughput transfers with configurable record and buffer settings.
  • Integrates cleanly with custom producer/consumer applications and ETL tools that can read from or write to named pipes.

Typical use cases:

  • Low-latency ingestion from external processes where writing to files would add delay or cost.
  • Secure, ephemeral data transfers where minimizing data at rest is important.
  • Integrations with in-house adapters or scripts that generate or consume data streams.

Requirements and notes:

  • Requires Teradata Tools and Utilities on a supported operating system and access to OS-level named pipes.
  • Pipe creation and lifecycle are managed by your external processes or scripts; the access module attaches to those endpoints.
  • Best suited for database administrators and data engineers who need flexible, scriptable streaming pipelines into or out of Teradata.
